چکیده

Using General Circulation Models (GCMs) for tropical cyclone studies is difficult due to the relatively small size of the storms, the intense convection and multitudes of large-scale small-scale interactions. These are mostly unresolved at typical GCM resolutions of about 50-100 km, and still challenged at high resolutions between 12-30 km. Nevertheless, high-resolution GCMs are becoming a tool of choice to assess tropical cyclones in current and future climate conditions. Therefore, the physics and dynamics components of a GCM need to be carefully evaluated to assess their fidelity for tropical cyclone studies.

Idealized tropical cyclone simulations of intermediate complexity: A test case for AGCMs

[1] The paper introduces a moist, deterministic test case of intermediate complexity for Atmospheric General Circulation Models (AGCMs). We suggest pairing an AGCM dynamical core with simple physical parameterizations to test the evolution of a single, idealized, initially weak vortex into a tropical cyclone. The initial conditions are based on an initial vortex seed that is in gradient-wind an...

Impact of physical parameterizations on idealized tropical cyclones in the Community Atmosphere Model

[1] This paper explores the impact of the physical parameterization suite on the evolution of an idealized tropical cyclone within the National Center for Atmospheric Research’s (NCAR) Community Atmosphere Model (CAM). The CAM versions 3.1 and 4 are used to study the development of an initially weak vortex in an idealized environment over a 10‐day simulation period within an aqua‐planet setup. ...

Projected Twenty-First-Century Changes in the Length of the Tropical Cyclone Season

This study investigates projected changes in the length of the tropical cyclone season due to greenhouse gas increases. Two sets of simulations are analyzed, both of which capture the relevant features of the observed annual cycle of tropical cyclones in the recent historical record. Both sets use output from the general circulation models (GCMs) of either phase 3 or phase 5 of the CMIP suite (...

Implementation of a Mesh Movement Scheme in a Multiply Nested Ocean Model and Its Application to Air–Sea Interaction Studies

A mesh movement scheme is implemented in a multiply nested primitive equation ocean model. Mesh movement can be specified or determined in the course of the model run so as to follow an evolving oceanic feature, such as a wave front or propagating eddy, or atmospheric forcing, such as a tropical cyclone. Mass, heat, and momentum are conserved during the movement. The mesh movement scheme is tes...

Evaluation of the Utility of Static and Adaptive Mesh Refinement for Idealized Tropical Cyclone Problems in a Spectral Element Shallow Water Model

5 The utility of static and adaptive mesh refinement (SMR and AMR, respectively) are ex6 amined for idealized tropical cyclone (TC) simulations in a spectral element f -plane shallow 7 water model. The SMR simulations have varying sizes of the statically refined meshes 8 (geometry-based) while the AMR simulations use a potential vorticity (PV) threshold to 9 adaptively refine the mesh to the ev...
